Rama Chellappa's election to the National Academy of Engineering highlighted his career-long contributions to digital image analysis and automatic face recognition. This honor places him among the ranks of engineers whose innovations have significantly advanced their fields, underscoring his influence on both academic research and practical applications.

Project PI Richard Baraniuk presented the 2023 AMS Josiah Willard Gibbs Lecture at the Joint Mathematics Meeting in Boston, Massachusetts in January 2023.  The first AMS Josiah Willard Gibbs Lecture was given in 1923. This public lecture is one of the signature events in the Society’s calendar.  Previous speakers have included Albert Einstein, Vannevar Bush, John von Neumann, Norbert Wiener, Kurt Gödel, Hermann Weyl, Eugene Wigner, Donald Knuth, Herb Simon, David Mumford, Ingrid Daubechies, and Claude Shannon.

Congratulations to project PI Richard Baraniuk who has been elected to the National Academy of Engineering in recognition of his contributions to engineering "for the development and broad dissemination of open educational resources and for foundational contributions to compressive sensing." Congratulations to Project PI Moshe Vardi who has won the 2021 Norbert Wiener Award for Social and Professional Responsibility from IEEE's Society on the Social Implications of Technology (SSIT). Vardi was honored for "for leadership in raising awareness on adverse societal consequences of computing and communication technologies."

Congratulations to project PI Ryan Tibshirani who is selected as 2022 IMS Fellow for his "fundamental contributions to the applications, algorithms and inference problems related to LASSO and convex optimization methods; and conformal inference, high dimensional statistics and public health."

Congratulations to project PI Ryan Tibshirani who received the SPAIG Award for his "commitment to the theory and practice of epidemic tracking and forecasting through building and modeling public health data streams."

Congratulations to project PI Stan Osher, who was recently ranked by PLOS as having the second highest impact in Applied Math worldwide based on data for 6 million scientists in 22 major fields!

Also, Siting Liu, and, Wunjon Lee, two of Stan's graduated PhD students were each awarded UCLA Dissertation Year Fellowship.
